Exploring Premature Ejaculation

The truth is that many men do from time to time ejaculate sooner during sexual intercourse than they would like to or their partner would like them to. Doing so on an infrequent basis is no cause for concern. If, however, you experience premature ejaculation on a consistent basis in which you either ejaculate before intercourse begins or you do so shortly afterwards, then you may very well have a condition referred to in medical circles as "premature ejaculation".

As far as sexual disorder go, premature ejaculation is pretty common. Experts believe that one in three men experience premature ejaculation. The men experiencing this disorder are usually embarrassed and rarely seek medical attention for the disorder.

Unfortunately before there was much research done on the subject, men who experienced premature ejaculation were thought to have psychological problems. Today, it is now understood by experts that biological factors also play a significant role in this disorder. The disorder can also be related to erectile dysfunction.

Treatments are available for premature ejaculation including medications, learning sexual techniques to delay the ejaculation until the appropriate time, and psychological counseling. Usually the treatment plan involves a combination of different treatments.

Symptoms:

Ejaculation occurs on a regular basis outside of the desired time according to both sexual partners

Incorrectly timed ejaculation may occur in all types of sexual activity including masturbation or it may only occur during some sexual activities and not in others or with one person but not with another person.

There are usually two types of medical classifications for premature ejaculation:

Primary premature ejaculation - this is the term used when the problem has existed for as long as the individual has been sexually active

Secondary premature ejaculation - the condition has developed after there has been a satisfactory history of sexual relationships without experiencing any episodes of premature ejaculation.

Causes:

It is not entirely understood at the present time exactly what the causes are but experts believe that there may be some connection with early sexual experiences and the occurrence of premature ejaculation in later life. Situations such as when a male would rush through the sexual activity in order to not be discovered doing it or have had experiences of great guilt that spurred the individual to rush through the sexual activity.

It is also thought that premature ejaculation has a connection with erectile dysfunction and also with anxiety that is directly connected with sex or that stem from other issues.

Biological factors that may also be involved in premature ejaculation include:

Hormonal levels that are abnormal

Brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that are abnormal

Reflex activity of the ejaculatory system that are abnormal

Thyroid problems

Prostate or urethra inflammation or infection

Heredity

It is rare, but the following factors have been known to have a connection with premature ejaculation:

Damage to the nervous system during surgery or while suffering from some sort of trauma to the nervous system

Resulting from withdrawal from narcotics or the drug called: trifluoperazine that is used to in the treatment of anxiety and other mental health issues.

It is thought by most experts that there is likely to be a underlying biological cause for the premature ejaculation that is in additional to psychological factors especially if the condition is a lifelong problem for the individual.
