Many men from time to time ejaculate sooner during sexual intercourse than they or their partner would like them to. Ejaculating early on an infrequent basis is no cause for concern. However, if you experience premature ejaculation on a consistent basis early either before intercourse begins or shortly afterwards, you may have a condition that in medical circles is called "premature ejaculation". Premature ejaculation, a sexual dysfunction is pretty common. It is believed that one in three men experience premature ejaculation. Men that have this disorder are usually embarrassed and rarely seek medical attention. It used to be thought that premature ejaculation was strictly a psychological problem. Experts believe today that biological factors also play a significant role in this sexual disorder. Men may also experience both premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction at the same time. There are several treatments for premature ejaculation including medications, learning sexual methods that help to delay the ejaculation until the appropriate time, and psychological counseling that help to relieve anxiety or depression. Usually the treatment plan involves a combination of these treatments. Symptoms: * Ejaculation that happens before the male or his partner is ready * Feelings of anxiety and depression associated with the inability to control the timing of ejaculation Incorrectly timed ejaculation may occur in all types of sexual activity or it may only occur during some sexual activities and not in others. Premature ejaculation may occur with only one partner or with all partners. There are usually two types of medical classifications for premature ejaculation: * Primary premature ejaculation - The problem has existed for as long as the individual has been experiencing coitus. * Secondary premature ejaculation - the condition has developed after a period of successful controlled ejaculation. Causes: There is no known cause for premature ejaculation. Experts believe that there may be some connection with early sexual experiences and premature ejaculation in later life. Sexual activity in which the male would rush through in order to not be discovered doing it (usually in the teen years) or have had experiences of great guilt that spurred the individual to rush through the sexual activity such as extramarital affairs or non-marital encounters. There may also be a connection between erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation because of the stress and anxiety associated with premature ejaculation might cause the symptoms of erectile dysfunction. Biological factors that may also be involved in premature ejaculation include: Hormonal levels that are abnormal Brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that are abnormal Reflex activity of the ejaculatory system that are abnormal Thyroid problems Prostate or urethra inflammation or infection It is rare, but sometimes damage to the nervous system during surgery or while suffering some sort of trauma to the nervous system can result in premature ejaculation. Withdrawal from narcotics or the drug called: trifluoperazine used to treat anxiety and other mental health issues may also lead to premature ejaculation. Lifelong problems with premature ejaculation are thought by most experts to have an underlying biological cause for the premature ejaculation that is in additional to psychological factors. |
